Protecting Outdoor Equipment During The Rainy Season: How To Choose The Right Industrial Locks

As the rainy season arrives, outdoor industrial equipment is exposed to increasingly complex operating conditions. Power boxes, control cabinets, communication enclosures, energy storage equipment, and various special-purpose vehicles may remain exposed to rain, moisture, and dust for long periods, while sensitive electrical components and control systems are housed inside. As a result, enclosure protection is an important consideration that needs to be addressed during the equipment design stage.

The waterproof performance of an enclosure mainly depends on its overall structure, door design, and sealing system. However, the lock installed on the door should not be overlooked. Although relatively small, an industrial lock plays an important role in securing and keeping the door closed. For industrial enclosures that require protection against water and dust, the stability of the closed door and the protective design around the lock installation area can directly affect the overall reliability of the equipment.

Industrial locks are more than simple opening and closing components. For outdoor equipment, lock selection should take into account the operating environment, door structure, sealing requirements, and actual operating conditions.

1. Industrial Locks for Outdoor Equipment: Waterproof Design Comes First

Once an enclosure is closed, the door needs to maintain stable contact with the sealing gasket. The locking force provided by the lock helps keep the door in position and allows the sealing system to work properly. If the lock itself is not designed for outdoor environments, or if the installation area lacks appropriate protection, rainwater and moisture may find their way into the enclosure.

For outdoor control boxes, power boxes, and industrial cabinets, the lock therefore needs to provide more than basic locking and opening functions. Its own waterproof structure is also an important consideration.

The SK1-063 Cam Lock, for example, is made of SUS304 stainless steel and incorporates a waterproof ring around the cylinder and a waterproof gasket within the housing. These features provide additional protection around the lock installation area, making the lock suitable for applications such as outdoor power boxes, control boxes, and industrial cabinets where waterproofing and corrosion resistance are important.

SUS304 stainless steel also offers good resistance to moisture and corrosion. For outdoor applications, both the material and the waterproof structure of the lock need to be considered rather than focusing on either one alone.

2. Large Enclosures: Multi-Point Locking for More Even Door Pressure

As equipment becomes larger, the size of its cabinet doors usually increases as well. For large electrical cabinets and communication enclosures, relying on a single locking point may not always provide sufficient stability across the entire door.

With a larger door, the locking force may not be evenly distributed across different areas. Insufficient pressure in certain areas can affect the contact between the sealing gasket and the enclosure, potentially reducing the effectiveness of the overall sealing system.

The SK1-090 Multi-Point Lock uses a linkage mechanism to transfer the locking action to multiple points along the door, providing multi-point locking. It features sealing and waterproof functions and allows the position of the transmission rods and locking direction to be adjusted according to installation requirements. It is suitable for applications such as network cabinets and electrical enclosures.

Multi-point locking not only improves the stability of a large cabinet door after closing, but also helps distribute the locking force more evenly across the door, allowing the door to work more effectively with the overall sealing system.

3. Humidity and Salt Spray: Material Selection Matters

For equipment operating outdoors or in high-humidity environments, rainwater is not the only factor that needs to be considered. Humidity, condensation, salt spray, and temperature changes can all affect metal components over time.

This is particularly relevant to marine equipment, outdoor automation systems, and certain specialized industrial equipment. Their locks may need to be operated frequently while remaining exposed to humid or corrosive environments for extended periods. Material selection therefore becomes an important part of the lock selection process.

The SK1-070 Cam Lock is made of SUS304 stainless steel and features a polished finish, providing good corrosion resistance. It uses a pull-up handle design and supports left- and right-hand operation. Its compact structure makes it suitable for applications including medical equipment, marine equipment, automation equipment, and automotive applications.

Marine equipment may be exposed to persistent humidity and salt spray, while automation equipment may come into contact with oil, cleaning agents, or other substances. Different operating conditions therefore require locks with suitable materials and structural designs.

For industrial locks, protection is not limited to water resistance. For equipment operating in complex environments over long periods, corrosion resistance is equally important.

4. Refrigerated Trucks and Test Chambers: Structure and Operation Both Matter

Outdoor cabinets are not the only equipment that requires reliable industrial locking solutions. Refrigerated trucks, environmental test chambers, and special-purpose vehicles also have specific requirements for locking performance and operation. Although their working environments are different, all of these applications require the door to remain securely closed while providing convenient operation.

The SK1-1894 Compression Handle is mainly used for test chambers, refrigerated trucks, and special-purpose vehicles. Its recessed design provides a compact installation with the door panel, while an internal linkage mechanism is used to secure the door.

In refrigerated transportation, the door needs to remain securely closed during vehicle operation and work together with the sealing system to help maintain the required internal environment. Test chambers, meanwhile, may require frequent opening and closing, meaning the lock needs to provide reliable locking while also considering ease of operation and structural durability.

The recessed design also reduces the amount of hardware protruding from the outside of the door, making it suitable for applications where installation space, equipment appearance, or a cleaner door surface are important considerations.

For outdoor industrial equipment, waterproofing is not achieved by a single component. It requires an overall structural approach in which every part that may be exposed to the environment is properly considered. Although an industrial lock is a relatively small component, it plays an important role in securing and maintaining the closed position of the door.

Especially during the rainy season and in long-term outdoor applications, an industrial lock with an appropriate structure and suitable material can work together with the overall enclosure protection system, helping provide reliable protection and supporting the long-term stable operation of industrial equipment.
