How Industrial Hardware Affects Medical Equipment Safety, Usability And Maintenance

Medical equipment is becoming increasingly automated, compact, and integrated. From in vitro diagnostic (IVD) systems and laboratory analyzers to imaging equipment and automated medical systems, modern equipment often integrates electronic controls, sensors, optical components, fluid systems, motors, and other precision modules within a relatively compact enclosure.

As internal systems become more complex, the external structure of the equipment also requires greater attention. Access doors, inspection panels, covers, and operating interfaces must protect internal components while allowing operators and maintenance personnel to interact with the equipment efficiently.

This is where industrial hardware for medical equipment becomes important.

Hinges, latches, handles, door catches, casters, and leveling feet may be relatively small components, but they directly contribute to equipment fixation, movement, operation, maintenance, and overall structural performance.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 2 million different types of medical devices on the global market, categorized into more than 7,000 generic device groups.

With such a broad range of equipment and applications, hardware selection cannot rely solely on dimensions or cost. It needs to be considered as part of the overall equipment design.

1. Why Is Industrial Hardware Important in Medical Equipment?

Medical equipment operates in a wide variety of environments and often requires frequent interaction between the operator and the machine.

For example, laboratory and IVD equipment may require regular access for:

  • Sample loading

  • Consumable replacement

  • Cleaning

  • Calibration

  • Inspection

  • Preventive maintenance

  • Troubleshooting

These operations can involve multiple mechanical components, including handles, latches, hinges, and door catches.

The following table illustrates some typical relationships between medical equipment and industrial hardware:
